Caroline MaddenThe Mark Duplass-produced Unlovable is a refreshingly honest depiction of a woman’s road to recovery from sex addiction, based on writer and star Charlene deGuzman’s own struggles. DeGuzman radiates with effervescence as the aptly named Joy, a thoroughly unique heroine with childlike pigtails who loves cuddly stuffed animals and wearing kooky, brightly colored outfits with a kawaii aesthetic over her petite, tattoo-covered body. After entering a 12-step program, her reluctant sponsor Maggie (played by a stern yet affectionate Melissa Leo) allows her to detox in her grandmother’s guest house, forbidding any interaction with her ex-boyfriend or sexual activity of any kind. The highlight of the film is the bond Joy forms with Maggie’s awkward recluse brother Jim (John Hawkes) when they start playing music together. With his lanky frame and newt-like expressions, Hawkes has always been a uniquely compelling indie character actor. He has crackling chemistry and great repartee with deGuzman as their characters form a sweet friendship. The movie’s original songs, written by Hawkes, are infectious earworms that demand a soundtrack release. Director Suzi Yoonessi manages to blend the film’s dark subject matter and frothy energy into a thoughtful and charming picture that sheds light on an under-seen struggle.
