Some of these stars (Queen Latifah, Justin Timberlake, Arnold Schwarzenegger) have gone on to tremendous careers onscreen, while others (O.J. Simpson, Mike Ditka, Christina Aguilera) flailed before getting out of the game. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Then there are the one-and-done cases: the celebrities who starred in one \u2013 and only one \u2013 major feature film in their careers. This raises the question of how these single star performances stack up against one another, no? Well, question asked, question answered.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>9. The Spice Girls \u2013 <i>Spice World <\/i>(1997)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11447 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/MCDSPWO_EC004-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/MCDSPWO_EC004-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/MCDSPWO_EC004-1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>For children of the &#8217;90s, <i>Spice World <\/i>was a beloved glam indulgence, the highest (and loudest) expression of pop fanaticism imaginable. But looking at the film now, what once felt like a self-addressed valentine to the best-selling female group in history (from an idea by and starring the quintet) now looks like something of a fun-house mirror: shiny, warped, and even grotesque in its distortions of real personalities. It comes as no surprise that the group never made another movie together \u2013 for all their collective might as musical icons, the Spice Girls were mere wannabes as actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SpiceWorld - The Photoshoot\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XkhB6lVPdNg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>8. Britney Spears \u2013 <i>Crossroads <\/i>(2002)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11449\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/crossroads-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/crossroads-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/crossroads.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Like the Spice Girls, Spears\u2019 first silver-screen star vehicle came at the height of her power in the industry. But when <i>Crossroads <\/i>was released, the singer was quickly maligned for being the worst actor in a movie slick with schmaltz and more than a touch of internalized misogyny. While it\u2019s true that Spears fares poorly against heavyweights like Dan Aykroyd and Kim Cattrall, her role as small-town Georgia girl Lucy drove the movie to financial success, demonstrating not for the last time that enough charisma can carry even the sloppiest project to the finish line. To her credit, Spears made a courageous cameo as the fembot version of herself in <i>Austin Powers: Goldmember <\/i>that same year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CROSSROADS BRITNEY SPEARS CAR SCENE 2002\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d4E98w-AZ1g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>7. Howard Stern \u2013 <i>Private Parts <\/i>(1997)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11450\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/privateparts-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/privateparts-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/privateparts.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Stern\u2019s role in this film based on his own life story isn\u2019t his best performance onscreen \u2013 that would be his appearance as flatulent superhero Fartman during the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Still, the \u201cHoward Stern\u201d character played by the King of Entertainment was infinitely warmer than the smarmy persona honed on air during Stern\u2019s shock jock years. Not only does \u201cHoward\u201d convincingly fall in love with Mary McCormack\u2019s Alison Stern (the real Howard Stern is now married to Beth Ostrosky); he also goes toe-to-toe with the frantic and comically detestable <i>tour-de-force<\/i> that is Kevin \u201cPig Vomit\u201d Metheny (played by a wonderful Paul Giamatti). As for Robin Quivers and Jackie \u201cThe Joke Man\u201d Martling, who also appear in their first film roles, it\u2019s probably best that we never got <i>Private Parts 2<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Howard Stern tells vietnam story in Private Parts (1997)\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q1iS1CU9h1Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>6. Michael Jackson \u2013 <i>The Wiz <\/i>(1978)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11451\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/the-wiz-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/the-wiz-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/the-wiz.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>While it\u2019s true that Michael Jackson also appeared in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s <i>Captain EO <\/i>and in the much-beloved <i>Moonwalker<\/i> anthology (not to mention some of the most influential music videos ever), The Scarecrow in <i>The Wiz <\/i>represents Michael\u2019s only starring role in a theatrically released feature. As Dorothy\u2019s (Diana Ross) bubbly, cowardly buddy, Jackson\u2019s performance was rewarded with strong reviews, with Roger Ebert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rogerebert.com\/reviews\/the-wiz-1978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">saying<\/span><\/a> he \u201cfills the role with humor and warmth.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The film is far from perfect \u2013 underwritten and charmless, it may be master director Sidney Lumet\u2019s least accomplished work \u2013 but Jackson ultimately comes off as an endearing goofball with a Broadway-ready voice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Wiz (2\/8) Movie CLIP - Scarecrow Joins Dorothy (1978) HD\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dk3BfcWrx8c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>5. Jackie Robinson \u2013 <i>The Jackie Robinson Story <\/i>(1950)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11452\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/v1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/v1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/v1.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Many who remember Brian Helgeland\u2019s Jackie Robinson biopic <i>42<\/i> from earlier this decade may be surprised to learn that a superior film about the life of the baseball legend featuring Robinson as himself exists. <i>The Jackie Robinson Story<\/i>, which fuses newsreel footage with staged scenes featuring character actors Ruby Dee and Louise Beavers, was an early example of the \u201cwhat\u2019s real vs. what\u2019s not\u201d docudrama genre so prevalent today. Robinson does much of the heavy lifting, proving 5 years before Elvis Presley broke big in <i>Love Me Tender<\/i> that even a novice actor can command the frame if directed correctly. Sadly, this movie is hardly shown anymore \u2013 even in film history courses \u2013 but it\u2019s worth seeking out for Robinson\u2019s powerful performance alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=biLJvoQp0C4<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>4. Michael Jordan \u2013 <i>Space Jam <\/i>(1996)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11453\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/space-jam.0.0-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/space-jam.0.0-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/space-jam.0.0.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Perhaps the most iconic one-off performance on this list, Michael Jordan\u2019s role as himself in <i>Space Jam <\/i>remains a touchstone for children around the world. <i>Space Jam<\/i> was groundbreaking at the time for its post-<i>Roger Rabbit<\/i> hybridization of live action and animation. But the real shock 23 years later remains MJ, who acquits himself better than (almost) any professional athlete had before him. As the bemused straight man to the likes of Bugs Bunny and Bill Murray, Jordan allows himself to be the butt of every joke; but with a sly, crackling wit, he also produces a couple dozen wisecracks himself without so much as an ironic smirk. It\u2019s truly impressive, downright legendary comedy. A re-watch is more necessary now than ever: with Terrence Nance\u2019s <i>Space Jam <\/i>sequel starring LeBron James impending, His Airness may soon lose his crown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Space Jam Dunk\" width=\"760\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-S9W9xZikkA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>3. Eminem \u2013 <i>8 Mile <\/i>(2002)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11454\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/8-Mile-Gallery-5-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/8-Mile-Gallery-5-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/8-Mile-Gallery-5.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The rapper known as Eminem has proved to have a healthy sense of humor about himself: He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vAnBes__11Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">let Bruno tea-bag him<\/span><\/a> at the MTV Movie &amp; TV Awards; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0qWMjgpIECA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">traded barbs with Ray Romano<\/span><\/a> in <i>Funny People<\/i>; and he even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j3FLExfivUc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">faked his own coming-out-of-the closet<\/span><\/a> in <i>The Interview<\/i>. His most astonishing achievements, however, remain the lead performance and Oscar-winning songwriting he contributed to <i>8 Mile<\/i>, the Curtis Hanson-directed drama drawn in part from the musician\u2019s early life in Detroit. Eminem was already a star when the film came out, yet he succeeds in earnest portraying Rabbit as a repressed, volcanically angry stand-in for the disenfranchised many of Motor City. As a result, the film remains one of the strongest ever made about hip-hop, poverty, and the ties that bind them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"8 Mile - Parking Lot\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/InBMOxxISCw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>2. LeBron James \u2013 <i>Trainwreck <\/i>(2015)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11456\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/trainwreck-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/trainwreck-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/trainwreck.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201c<i>I really have to ask you a question. Don\u2019t hurt him.<\/i>\u201d It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/space-jam-2-film-california-1162269\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">won\u2019t be long<\/span><\/a> before the G.O.A.T. no longer fits on this list. For now, then, let\u2019s luxuriate in his ingenious casting as a stingy, over-protective version of himself in Judd Apatow\u2019s <i>Trainwreck<\/i>. Ostensibly conceived as a star vehicle for Amy Schumer and Bill Hader, James and his delicious one-liners steal every scene, including the bloopers, with the same effortless elegance he brings to the court. Watching him cut-up about <i>Downton Abbey<\/i>, some might find it infuriating that one of the wealthiest and most admired athletes in history is also one of its funniest; nonetheless, respect must be paid where due. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trainwreck (2015) - LeBron&#039;s Advice Scene (7\/10) | Movieclips\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zie94YV7W4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>1. Bj\u00f6rk<\/b> <b>\u2013 <i>Dancer in the Dark <\/i>(2000)<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11455\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dancer_Dark_2000_10-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dancer_Dark_2000_10-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Dancer_Dark_2000_10.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Dancer in the Dark<\/i> is neither for the faint of heart nor for the casual Sugarcubes fan. If anything, Lars von Trier\u2019s traumatic epic about a woman (Bj\u00f6rk) slowly going blind is intended to mock those who idolize the pleasantly surreal, sprite-like Icelandic singer. Instead, Von Trier replaces her charm and warmth with a drained, disturbing sense of hopelessness. So effective was her performance under Von Trier \u2013 whose direction, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2017\/oct\/16\/bjork-claims-she-was-sexually-harassed-by-a-film-director\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s3\">it\u2019s been suggested, was intensely abusive<\/span><\/a> \u2013 that director and star together received an Academy Award nomination for the original song \u201cI\u2019ve Seen It All,\u201d a miserablist dirge sung amongst laborers on a countryside railway.
