Enter Zack and Miri Make a Porno<\/em> (newly streaming on Netflix<\/a>, Amazon Prime<\/a>, and<\/em> Hulu)<\/a>, Smith\u2019s 2008 raunchy rom-com strikes the perfect balance between his lowbrow indie sensibilities and a crowd-pleasing, commercially viable product. It has rising stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks in the lead roles, with Smith buddies Jason Mewes and Jeff Anderson in supporting parts. It features a predictable yet satisfying love story, and it also features a porn star taking a shit on someone\u2019s face. It should have been a massive hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, it achieved minimal box-office success and received mixed reviews from critics, and was mostly regarded as a failure following Rogen\u2019s string of comedy hits (Knocked Up<\/em>, Superbad<\/em>, Pineapple Express<\/em>). Smith made one more ill-advised attempt to go mainstream, directing the 2010 action comedy Cop Out<\/em> (his only feature film that he didn\u2019t write), before retreating to the insular world of independently financed, often self-distributed films that seem aimed solely at his existing fan base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking back at Zack and Miri<\/em>, though, it\u2019s easy to imagine an alternate reality in which this movie was a huge hit, and Smith joined Rogen collaborator Judd Apatow as one of the comedy kingpins of the \u201900s. There\u2019s plenty of humor that hasn\u2019t aged well (and a lot of dated alt-rock on the soundtrack), but Zack and Miri<\/em> is a likeable, fun rom-com with great chemistry between its two stars, and none of the awkward amateurishness that still plagues Smith\u2019s more autonomous productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s in part thanks to Smith\u2019s willingness to allow his stars some leeway for improvisation (taking a cue from Apatow), and in part thanks to the higher production values that come from major financial backing. Although Smith wrote, directed and edited it, Zack and Miri<\/em> feels exactly like the wide-release studio product that it is, and not in a bad way. Banks first appears onscreen wearing nothing but a hockey jersey and slippers, and Mewes and Anderson would never make it into a mainstream movie without Smith behind the camera. But other elements downplay Smith\u2019s auteurist quirks in favor of time-tested Hollywood storytelling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n That starts with the title characters, who are obviously meant for each other from the moment they\u2019re introduced. Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) are lifelong friends, who are both working dead-end jobs and living together in a crummy apartment in the Pittsburgh suburb where they grew up. They trade insults that clearly mask romantic affection, and they protest far too strongly when anyone suggests that they should be more than friends. They\u2019re obviously going to end up together by the end of the movie, but as in any good rom-com, the pleasure comes in seeing how they get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And how they get there is via porn. Broke and facing eviction, they seize on the idea of making their own dirty movie for a quick buck, after a video of Miri in her underwear goes viral. The violation of Miri\u2019s privacy (by two random rude teens) is played for laughs, and there are moments of discomfort throughout the film that aren\u2019t nearly as funny as the movie makes them out to be. But overall Smith\u2019s perspective is remarkably sex-positive, especially in how positive it is about the main characters having sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead of ruining their relationship, sex between Zack and Miri deepens it, finally showing them how much they truly love each other. They\u2019re then torn apart by toxic jealousy on both sides, but this isn\u2019t Clerks<\/em>\u2019 Dante hypocritically judging his girlfriend for sucking 37 dicks. It\u2019s two people acting immaturely because they\u2019re not yet ready to face their feelings for each other. Rogen was the bigger star at the time the movie came out, but Smith gives Banks a substantial arc as Miri, who\u2019s not just an idealized object of affection for Zack. She may be the most fully realized female character that Smith ever created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The genuine sweetness of the romance is important, but of course a movie about making porn is full of dirty jokes, from the ongoing litany of terrible pun titles (including one that was blatantly ripped off for a Sex and the City 2<\/em> joke two years later) to the aforementioned face-shitting (courtesy of an eager stripper played by adult film star Katie Morgan). There\u2019s a goofy let\u2019s-put-on-a-show vibe to the terrible no-budget porn production that Zack and Miri oversee, and in its own twisted way, the movie is Smith\u2019s tribute to indie filmmaking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Thirteen years ago, Zack and Miri<\/em> looked like another stumbling block in Smith\u2019s uneven career, and it\u2019s been largely forgotten by his fans \u2013 both the purists who only like the early stuff and the hardcore devotees who attended roadshow screenings of Jay and Silent Bob Reboot<\/em>. But in hindsight, Zack and Miri<\/em> now looks like Kevin Smith\u2019s Last Stand, a movie that made the difference between an Apatow-like Hollywood career and the outsider empire he ended up creating.
