If you\u2019re not totally looped in on new releases (as we are) then you may not know what\u2019s fresh to the market and what\u2019s been knocking around forever; if you\u2019re not hooked in to the nerd world, you may not be aware of weird little knick knacks that might not have even made it to our wish lists. So with that in mind, I present to you some of the year\u2019s best box sets, books, discs, and more\u2014just click on any bold-faced item to grab it and go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BOX SETS:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shout Selects followed up their 2018 release of the initial adventures of Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted \u201cTheodore\u201d Logan (Keanu Reeves) with <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3yFsKbJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Bill &amp; Ted\u2019s Most Triumphant Trilogy<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a 4K upgrade that adds in 2020\u2019s long-awaited third installment,&nbsp;<em>Bill &amp; Ted Face the Music.<\/em>&nbsp;Shout is also releasing a new 4K edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/shoutfactory.com\/products\/wallace-gromit-the-complete-cracking-collection-4k-uhd-collectors-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Wallace &amp; Gromit: The Complete Cracking Collection<\/em><\/strong><\/a> in December\u2014just in time for Christmas, and just in time for the release of the new (and wonderful) Netflix-produced <em>Wallace &amp; Gromit <\/em>feature. This one includes their earlier <em>Curse of the Were-Rabbit<\/em>, as well as all four of their award-winning shorts and their ten <em>Cracking Contraptions<\/em> micro-shorts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Horror and thriller fans will appreciate <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3U8Rtwt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Paramount Scares Vol. 2<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a random but wonderful collection that includes the varying likes of <em>Breakdown, World War Z, Friday the 13th Part II<\/em>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/why-baghead-jason-voorhees-is-the-best-jason-voorhees\/\">which some smart critics deem the highlight of the series<\/a>) and&nbsp;<em>Orphan: First Kill; <\/em>it also comes with loads of good swag, making it especially gift-worthy. And then there\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4fm7ZlT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Rocky: Ultimate Knockout Collection<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which tops Warner Bros.\u2019 4K set of the the first four&nbsp;<em>Rocky<\/em>&nbsp;movies last year by adding&nbsp;<em>Rocky V<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Rocky Balboa<\/em>&nbsp;(including a new director\u2019s cut of the latter) and correcting the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blu-ray.com\/movies\/Rocky-The-Knockout-Collection-4K-Blu-ray\/329865\/#Review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A\/V issues<\/a>&nbsp;that gave the last set an immediate bad reputation. And while Universal has been releasing a steady stream of excellent Hitchcock 4K boxes, you can get the cream of that crop\u2014along with the recently released <em>North by Northwest<\/em> and <em>To Catch a Thief<\/em> from rival studios\u2014in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3ZqHNAs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Alfred Hitchcock: The Iconic Film Collection<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further out on the fringes, Arrow Video\u2019s six-disc Blu-ray set <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3U2z45w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe<\/em><\/strong><\/a> collects all ten of the wildly off-the-wall mixtures of horror, thriller, dark comedy and winking eroticism that Brazilian filmmaker Jos\u00e9 Mojica Marins made from 1964 to 2008. Arrow\u2019s excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Nqyx8M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Project A Collection<\/em><\/strong><\/a> gives us glistening 4K restorations of 1983\u2019s <em>Project A <\/em>and 1987\u2019s\u00a0<em>Project A II\u2014<\/em>Jackie in his prime, giving us great action\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0great gags in equal proportion. Both are a blast, and this set is an essential purchase for any fans of Hong Kong action cinema in general, and of its master in particular. And their latest Blu-ray collection of martial arts classics from the Shaw Brothers studios, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/diabolikdvd.com\/product\/v3-shawscope-volume-three-arrow-us-limited-edition-blu-ray-preorder\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/diabolikdvd.com\/product\/v3-shawscope-volume-three-arrow-us-limited-edition-blu-ray-preorder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Shawscope Vol. 3<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, is a feast of fine wuxia epics, including the <em>One-Armed Swordsman<\/em> trilogy. Fans of Asian action will also want to pick up Radiance Films\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radiancefilms.co.uk\/products\/shinobi-le\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Shinobi<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, set, starring\u00a0Raizo Ichikawa in a trilogy of ninja action epics:\u00a0<em>Band of Assassins, Revenge,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Resurrection<\/em>. These are rousing adventure tales, crispy photographed and cleanly composed, with purposeful and precise camerawork, filled with thrilling set pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"894\" height=\"562\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shawscope.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shawscope.jpg 894w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/shawscope-768x483.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 894px) 100vw, 894px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br \/>Vinegar Syndrome\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/forgotten-gialli-volume-seven\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Forgotten Gialli: Volume 7<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>continues their long-running collection of obscure Italian proto-slashers, this time including <em>Mystere<\/em> from director Carlo Vanzina, whose deliciously sleazy <em>Nothing Underneath <\/em>is a VS favorite; that film\u2019s writer, Franco Ferrini, making his sole journey into the director\u2019s chair with <em>Sweets from a Stranger<\/em>; and Piccio Raffanini\u2019s <em>Obsession: A Taste for Fear<\/em>. Vinegar Syndrome also recently released the three-movie set <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/cruel-britannia-three-killer-thrillers-from-the-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Cruel Britannia<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a collection of gripping British thrillers from the 1970s: Ted Hooker\u2019s <em>Crucible of Terror, <\/em>Jack Cardiff\u2019s <em>Penny Gold<\/em>, and Freddie Francis\u2019s <em>Craze<\/em>. And Severin Films has just put out two excellent new Blu-ray collections: <a href=\"https:\/\/severinfilms.com\/products\/scala-3-disc-blu-ray-w-slipcase?srsltid=AfmBOooJ5D_F3aabmSNga6bn3PKUKqbVcfuXjvkNye3PBlbKM3SaQn1a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Scala!!! Or, The Incredibly Strange Rise And Fall Of The World&#8217;s Wildest Cinema And How It Influenced A Mixed-up Generation Of Weirdos And Misfits<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a three-disc set which combines a new documentary about the notorious repertory film house in one of London\u2019s sketchiest neighborhoods with two discs of additional shorts, interviews, and more; and <a href=\"https:\/\/severinfilms.com\/products\/hard-wood-the-adult-features-of-ed-wood-3-disc-blu-ray?srsltid=AfmBOop-kBZfmrMJ-qJEuxX6n6_3FYLkwdKOGZwPalLTnUkPv5uK4cMy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Hard Wood: The Adult Features of Ed Wood<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a three-disc set which collects four of the <em>even less<\/em> reputable later features of the <em>Glen or Glenda<\/em> director.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, Criterion gave us plenty of good boxes in 2024; my favorites are<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49NKlex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Eric Rohmer\u2019s Tales of the Four Seasons<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, collecting the French master\u2019s quartet of quietly played but deftly executed romantic comedy\/dramas from the \u201890s, and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Unm8an\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Chantal Akerman Masterpieces, 1968-1978<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which honors the first decade of the late, great filmmaker\u2019s career with a nine-film, three-disc collection. The centerpiece, of course, is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/sight-and-sound\/features\/greatest-film-all-time-jeanne-dielman-23-quai-du-commerce-1080-bruxelles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently-crowned best movie ever<\/a>, her 1975 drama&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles<\/em><\/a>, but there\u2019s much more to this set; I\u2019m especially fond of her 1974 debut feature&nbsp;<em>Je Tu Il Elle<\/em>, a claustrophobic and intimate (she plays the leading role) meditation on sexuality and loneliness, and of her marvelous 1976 documentary&nbsp;<em>News from Home<\/em>, a moody and elegiac reflection on the years she spent in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Classic comedy fans will adore KL Studio Classics\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/kinolorber.com\/product\/on-the-road-with-hope-and-crosby-road-to-singapore-road-to-zanzibar-road-to-morocco-road-to-utopia-road-to-rio-road-to-bali-the-road-to-hong-kong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>On the Road with Hope and Crosby<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>box set, which includes all seven of the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby (and Dorothy Lamour) <em>Road to\u2026<\/em> musical\/comedies, filled with catchy songs, memorable comic bits, and quotable, meta-textual quips. And maybe it\u2019s a cheat to include a TV box set here, but KL did us the service of complementing their earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/kinolorber.com\/product\/columbo-the-1970s-seasons-1-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Columbo: The 1970s<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>Blu-ray box with <a href=\"https:\/\/kinolorber.com\/product\/columbo-the-return\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Columbo: The Return<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, collecting the 24 made-for-TV movies Peter Falk made when he returned to his signature character in 1989. They don\u2019t quite match the originals, no, but they\u2019re a lot of fun, and Falk and his guest stars are having a blast\u2014especially Faye Dunaway, whose 1993 episode <em>It\u2019s All in the Game<\/em> was Falk\u2019s sole writing credit on the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/intermissiontimevideopartyslipfront-1024x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25064\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/intermissiontimevideopartyslipfront-1024x1024.webp 1024w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/intermissiontimevideopartyslipfront-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/intermissiontimevideopartyslipfront-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/intermissiontimevideopartyslipfront-768x768.webp 768w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/intermissiontimevideopartyslipfront-1536x1536.webp 1536w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/intermissiontimevideopartyslipfront.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br \/><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">BLU-RAYS AND 4Ks:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The single Blu-ray I\u2019ve found myself recommending most this year, at least to weirdos like me, is AGFA and Something Weird Video\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/hey-folks-its-the-intermission-time-video-party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Hey Folks! It\u2019s the Intermission Time Video Party<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which includes not only an ingeniously edited remix of the best bits from&nbsp;SW\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Hey Folks! It\u2019s Intermission Time<\/em>&nbsp;VHS compilations, which compiled hours of vintage drive-in bumpers, movie theater ads, and other bits of miscellanea; it also includes all six of those original compilations, adding up to a staggering 718 minutes of throwback fun \u2014 a real bargain for a certain type of film-obsessed weirdo (hi).&nbsp;AGFA also followed up its essential&nbsp;<em>AGFA Horror Trailer Show&nbsp;<\/em>disc from a couple of years back with another compilation of trailers, commercials, PSAs and onscreen ephemera, and <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/cult-of-agfa-trailer-show?_pos=1&amp;_psq=The+Cult+of+AGFA+Trailer+Show&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Cult of AGFA Trailer Show<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is another banger for us weirdos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the more serious side, there aren\u2019t enough superlatives for <a href=\"https:\/\/grindhousevideo.com\/products\/made-in-england-the-films-of-powell-and-pressburger-blu-ray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Made In England: The Films of Powell &amp; Pressburger<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, from director David Hinton and executive producer\/\u201cpresenter\u201d (in the best British tradition)&nbsp;Martin Scorsese, who has spent his entire career advocating for filmmakers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/powell-and-pressburger-and-the-dynamic-potential-of-the-blockbuster\/\">Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger<\/a>&nbsp;and here comes off as a combination of professor, filmmaker, and fan, walking through the Powell and Pressburger filmography picture by picture, breaking down themes, narrative, technique, specific choices, and (most intriguing) the explicit connections to his own work. #TCMParty folks will also want to pick up Criterion\u2019s long-overdue Blu-ray upgrade of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4dGipuA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Pandora\u2019s Box<\/em><\/strong><\/a>,&nbsp;G.W. Pabst\u2019s unforgettable inaugural collaboration with Louise Brooks, one of the greatest of all silent movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criterion was really on a roll this year; some of my favorite of their recent releases included the spooky Val Lewton-produced double feature of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Y26z8p\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>I Walked with a Zombie \/ The Seventh Victim<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; their loving restoration (leap-frogging from DVD to 4K) of Sam Peckinpah\u2019s 1973&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/peckinpahs-elegy-pat-garrett-and-billy-the-kid-at-50\/\">farewell to the West<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bJsgP6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; Paul Brickman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3LL4lVa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Risky Business<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, finally getting its due as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/the-delayed-revolution-of-risky-business-in-teen-movies\/\">no ordinary teen movie<\/a>; the Wachowskis\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/in-praise-of-bound-the-wachowskis-underappreciated-noir-masterpiece\/\">1996 stealing-from-the-mob caper picture with a lesbian-erotica twist<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c5YQMh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Bound<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; Albert Brooks\u2019s magnificent debut feature, the prescient and hilarious <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3WWU5hP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Real Life<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; Gus Van Sant\u2019s similarly ahead-of-its-time satire <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3Vy2jhl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>To Die For<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, with an <a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/how-to-die-for-changed-the-game-for-nicole-kidman\/\">all-time great<\/a> Nicole Kidman performance; Michael Roemer\u2019s bruising debut feature <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3IdVTMl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Nothing But a Man<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; and Nancy Savoca\u2019s heart-wrenching <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4bcLCfO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Dogfight<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which (along with KL\u2019s Blu-ray releases of <a href=\"https:\/\/kinolorber.com\/product\/true-love-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>True Love<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/kinolorber.com\/product\/household-saints-1?srsltid=AfmBOoqwzINZvKTLSSgj--whFW9hOug0ZRVO_4U-TZU_kurIPQLmXqK4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Household Saints<\/em><\/a>) finally gave that overlooked filmmaker some overdue flowers. And among their previous releases that got the 4K bump, I\u2019d heartily recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3TentPh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Repo Man<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/49xqW1a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>McCabe and Mrs. Miller<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3TWuzJF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Blood Simple<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3ZPUXYL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Long Good Friday<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, with its <a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/how-beast-becomes-beauty-in-the-long-good-friday\/\">unforgettable turn by Bob Hoskins<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1014\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/StopMakingSense_Blu-Ray_1371-tight-gray-1014x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/StopMakingSense_Blu-Ray_1371-tight-gray-1014x1024.webp 1014w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/StopMakingSense_Blu-Ray_1371-tight-gray-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/StopMakingSense_Blu-Ray_1371-tight-gray-768x775.webp 768w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/StopMakingSense_Blu-Ray_1371-tight-gray-1521x1536.webp 1521w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/StopMakingSense_Blu-Ray_1371-tight-gray-2029x2048.webp 2029w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br \/>A few more 4Ks for your consideration: A24\u2019s electrifying disc for the Talking Heads and Jonathan Demme\u2019s all-timer concert film, <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.a24films.com\/products\/stop-making-sense-collectors-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Stop Making Sense<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; Shout Factory\u2019s 4K upgrades for <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3LpWUTa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Matinee<\/em><\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Joe Dante\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/the-cinematic-splendor-and-sleaze-of-joe-dantes-matinee\/\">affectionate tribute<\/a>\u00a0to the huckster showman likes of William Castle and Kroger Babb, and the potent, Tarantino-boosted 1977 revenge-o-matic <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3JG8aKe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Rolling Thunder<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; Vinegar Syndrome Labs\u2019s release of the delightful Western\/whodunit hybrid <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/collections\/frontpage\/products\/5-card-stud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>5 Card Stud<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; Arrow Video\u2019s DVD-only purgatory rescue of Anthony Waller\u2019s chilling <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3VlE5VE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Mute Witness<\/em><\/strong><\/a>; they have yet to put out a movie that wasn\u2019t worth seeing, but I\u2019d especially recommend their 4K releases of Robert Altman\u2019s elegant Depression-era drama <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/thieves-like-us?_pos=1&amp;_sid=4898cd362&amp;_ss=r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Thieves Like Us<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and the long-unavailable 1980 teen sex comedy <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/little-darlings?_pos=1&amp;_psq=Little+Darlings&amp;_ss=e&amp;_v=1.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Little Darlings<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, as well as the Blu-ray debut of perhaps the best of the 1990s indie neo-noirs, John Dahl\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vinegarsyndrome.com\/products\/red-rock-west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Red Rock West<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. One must also run, don\u2019t walk, to pick up a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/author\/abby-olcese\/\">Crooked Marquee contributor<\/a> Abby Olcese\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/films-for-all-seasons-experiencing-the-church-year-at-the-movies-abby-olcese\/21274926?ean=9781514007846\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Films for All Seasons: Experiencing the Church Year at the Movies<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which shines several great movies (most of them secular) through a religious prism with wise and often witty results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other great and recent film books include the perfect pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/hollywood-pride-a-celebration-of-lgbtq-representation-and-perseverance-in-film-alonso-duralde\/20600785?ean=9780762485895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Hollywood Pride: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Representation and Perseverance in Film<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Alonso Duralde\u2019s exhaustive history of queer film and filmmakers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/corpses-fools-and-monsters-an-examination-of-trans-film-images-in-cinema-willow-maclay\/19649293?ean=9781914420580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Corpses, Fools and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, in which Caden Mark Gardner and Willow Catelyn Maclay deep-dive into both explicit and implicit trans filmmaking; <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/the-future-was-now-madmen-mavericks-and-the-summer-sci-fi-abducted-hollywood-chris-nashawaty\/18139766?ean=9781250827050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The Future Was Now: Madmen, Mavericks, and the Epic Sci-Fi Summer of 1982<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Chris Nashawaty\u2019s crackling history of the summer that gave us <em>E.T., Blade Runner, The Thing, Poltergeist<\/em>, and more of the most influential movies of the decade (and beyond).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another excellent pairing is Glenn Kenny\u2019s entertaining and thought-provoking jaunt through Brian De Palma\u2019s operatic gangster classic, <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/the-world-is-yours-the-making-of-scarface-original-glenn-kenny\/19481682?ean=9781335449627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The World Is Yours: The Story of Scarface<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, and De Palma scholar Laurent Bouzerau\u2019s meticulous <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/the-de-palma-decade-redefining-cinema-with-doubles-voyeurs-and-psychic-teens-laurent-bouzereau\/21070522?ean=9780762485574\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>The de Palma Decade: Redefining Cinema with Doubles, Voyeurs, and Psychic Teens<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Alexandra West\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barnesandnoble.com\/w\/gore-geous-alexandra-west\/1145365467\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Gore-Geous: Personal Essays on Beauty and Horror<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>is a series of insightful essays on how genre movies see women, and the ways (good and bad) in which they can make women see themselves. Ilana Kaplan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/nora-ephron-at-the-movies-a-visual-celebration-of-the-writer-and-director-behind-when-harry-met-sally-you-ve-got-mail-sleepless-in-seattle-an-ilana-ka\/21169950?ean=9781419763632\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Nora Ephron at the Movies<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is a must for your fall coffee table, a beautifully designed combination of glorious photos and probing analysis of Ephron\u2019s films and other writings. And finally, one cannot speak highly enough of <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/p\/books\/my-affair-with-art-house-cinema-essays-and-reviews-phillip-lopate\/21315219?ean=9780231216395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>My Affair with Art House Cinema<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the great Phillip Lopate\u2019s latest collection of essays and reviews, written with his signature grace and acumen. You can probably safely bypass Netflix, Prime, and Hulu, which it seems like everybody has (and whose pickings are increasingly slim), and probably Max too, what with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/media\/2023\/07\/05\/gq-pulled-david-zaslav-article\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evil overlord<\/a> and all. The best streaming service, at least for the movie geek, remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.criterionchannel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Criterion Channel<\/strong><\/a>, though you\u2019re running the risk there of doubling up, since it\u2019s so widely recognized as the cinephile standard. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shudder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Shudder<\/strong><\/a> is the must-have for horror heads, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paramountplus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Paramount+<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacocktv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Peacock<\/strong><\/a> have surprisingly robust catalogues as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve spent this year writing about some of the alternative streamers available to movie lovers who are looking beyond the usual offerings, and can highly recommend gift subs to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/29\/movies\/mubi-streaming-service.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>MUBI<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/26\/movies\/kino-film-collection-streaming.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kino Film Collection<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/25\/movies\/metrograph-at-home-streaming.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Metrograph at Home<\/strong><\/a>, and OVID for art-house denizens, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/27\/movies\/night-flight-plus-streaming-netflix-alternative.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Night Flight Plus<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/22\/movies\/cultpix-streaming-movies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Cultpix<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/30\/movies\/streaming-movies-arrow-player.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Arrow<\/strong><\/a> for those who are looking for wilder offerings.
