The adult stars include Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling as the fabulously dressed Space Ladies, Chris Pine as Beardy Science Dad, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Mom Who&#8217;s Mostly Not In It.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> Madeleine L&#8217;Engle&#8217;s 1962 novel is one of the most beloved young adult books ever published not to have already been turned into a theatrical film, so the stakes are high. DuVernay is the first woman of color ever to direct a movie with a budget of more than $100 million (and only the second woman total, after Patty Jenkins and <em>Wonder Woman<\/em>), so the stakes are even higher. Because you just know if it flops Hollywood will be like, &#8220;Well, we tried to let a girl do it and it didn&#8217;t work,&#8221; and then give some mediocre white dude his eighth or ninth second chance. Anyway, the reviews so far are middling: 44% positive at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/a_wrinkle_in_time_2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> (average score: 5.3\/10), 52\/100 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/a-wrinkle-in-time?ref=hp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Wrinkle in Time Official US Trailer\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UhZ56rcWwRQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Gringo<\/em> (R, 1:50)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gringo-trailer-e1513797220803.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8956\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gringo-trailer-e1513797220803.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gringo-trailer-e1513797220803.jpg 450w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/gringo-trailer-e1513797220803-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>Plot:<\/strong> Ordinary businessman (David Oyelowo) goes to Mexico to oversee production of a marijuana pill for his bosses (Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton), but gets kidnapped by a drug cartel and has to be rescued. By Sharlto Copley, of all people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Nash Edgerton (<em>The Square<\/em> [the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1085507\/reference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian<\/a> one, not the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt4995790\/reference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swedish<\/a> one])<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> David Oyelowo, Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton, Sharlto Copley<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> Not great, though at least they didn&#8217;t hide it from critics (see below). So far 32% of reviews are positive at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/gringo_2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> (average score: 4.7\/10), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/gringo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a> has it at 44\/100. Then again, how well do stoner action comedies usually do? (<em>Pineapple Express<\/em> is 68% at RT. (Note that <em>Gringo<\/em> is 32% but has an average of 4.3.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/the-strangers-prey-at-night\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a> has it at 48\/100, with a few very positive reviews, several in the middle, and a few bad ones (though nobody <em>hated<\/em> it so far).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Strangers: Prey at Night Trailer #1 (2018) | Movieclips Indie\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/91-Z20uttEk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>The Hurricane Heist<\/em> (PG-13, 1:40)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/22Q1GGmw1vt1OiTTt2ue9q4k6MW.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8959\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/22Q1GGmw1vt1OiTTt2ue9q4k6MW.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/22Q1GGmw1vt1OiTTt2ue9q4k6MW.jpg 450w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/22Q1GGmw1vt1OiTTt2ue9q4k6MW-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>Plot:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t be thrown by the title. This is not a movie about stealing hurricanes. That would be dumb. This is a movie about stealing money <em>during<\/em> a hurricane, like smart people do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Rob Cohen (<em>The Fast and the Furious<\/em> &#8212; the first one, before anyone was paying attention)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> Toby Kebbell, Maggie Grace, Ryan Kwanten, weather<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> This wasn&#8217;t screened for critics at all (except, somehow, for a guy at The Hollywood Reporter, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/review\/hurricane-heist-review-1089776\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">didn&#8217;t care for it<\/a>). This reluctance to show the film was probably over concerns that it would be too cerebral for critics.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t7lL0cdvcy0<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Thoroughbreds<\/em> (R, 1:32)<\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Thoroughbred-movie-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8960\" src=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Thoroughbred-movie-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Thoroughbred-movie-1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Thoroughbred-movie-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>Plot:<\/strong> In a dark comedy, two girls (Anya-Taylor Joy and Olivia Cooke) conspire to get rid of one girl&#8217;s stepfather, with the assistance of a drug dealer played by Anton Yelchin (who died a few days after shooting wrapped).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Cory Finley, a first-timer<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> Anya-Taylor Joy, Olivia Cooke, Anton Yelchin, Paul Sparks<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> This played at Sundance and Fantastic Fest in 2017 under the singular title <em>Thoroughbred<\/em>. It is unclear whether additional thoroughbreds were edited into the film to necessitate the name change. Anyway, reviews are good: 85% at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/thoroughbreds_2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> (7.1\/10 average), 76\/100 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/thoroughbreds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>. Many people (<a href=\"https:\/\/crookedmarquee.com\/stage8\/10-reviews-from-fantastic-fest-2017\/\">myself included<\/a>) have been raving about this since it played at Toronto, Fantastic Fest, and Sundance.
