Accept no substitutes (unless they&#8217;re better somehow)!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Rampage<\/em> (PG-13, 1:47)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Plot:<\/strong> A giant ape tries to calm down an even larger ape. Based on the video game (always a good sign).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Brad Peyton (<em>San Andreas<\/em>, <em>Cats &amp; Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> Dwayne Johnson, Naomie Harris, CGI<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> The reviews are split down the middle between &#8220;stupid fun&#8221; and &#8220;too stupid to be fun.&#8221; It&#8217;s at 52% at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/rampage_2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, with an average score of 45\/100 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/rampage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RAMPAGE - OFFICIAL TRAILER 1 [HD]\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/coOKvrsmQiI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Truth or Dare<\/em> (PG-13, 1:40)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Plot:<\/strong> Teens play the old &#8220;truth or dare&#8221; game, but the kids who refuse to tell the truth or perform the dare start dying (which is fair &#8212; games have rules for a reason). Being marketed as <em>Blumhouse&#8217;s Truth or Dare<\/em>, I guess to avoid confusion with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madonna:_Truth_or_Dare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madonna&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Jeff Wadlow (<em>Never Back Down<\/em>, <em>Kick-Ass 2<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> Blumhouse has a great track record producing horror films that make money, and a so-so track record producing horror films that are good. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/blumhouses_truth_or_dare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, only 20% of critics are recommending it; at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/truth-or-dare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>, the average score is 36\/100.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Truth or Dare Trailer #1 (2018) | Movieclips Trailers\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cgnk3MLw9TM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Beirut<\/em> (R, 1:49)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Plot:<\/strong>\u00a0In 1982, during the Lebanese Civil War, a retired U.S. diplomat is brought in to do One More Job: negotiating for the release of his friend from the same terrorist group that killed his own family. Hilarity ensues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Brad Anderson (<em>The Machinist<\/em>, <em>Vanishing on 7th Street<\/em>); the screenwriter is Tony Gilroy (<em>Michael Clayton<\/em>, the <em>Bourne<\/em> movies)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> Jon Hamm, Rosamund Pike, Dean Norris, Shea Whigham<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> Most of the reviews range from &#8220;OK&#8221; to &#8220;pretty good,&#8221; with only a few &#8220;I hate it&#8221; votes. It&#8217;s at 78% at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/beirut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, average score 70\/100 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/beirut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BEIRUT | Official Trailer\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SagsqxiVStM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero<\/em> (PG, 1:24)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Plot:<\/strong> Animated film based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sergeant_Stubby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">true story<\/a> of a stray dog who became the most decorated war dog of World War I. He was a good boy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Richard Lanni (nothing)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> Voices of Logan Lerman, Helena Bonham Carter, Gerard Depardieu<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> Despite being an out-of-nowhere entry from a new distributor (&#8220;Fun Academy Motion Pictures,&#8221; which sounds like a front), this is getting mostly good reviews from critics who say it&#8217;s effective and charming, especially for the young demographic it&#8217;s aimed at. It&#8217;s 90% at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/sgt_stubby_an_american_hero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> (average score is 6.1\/10 &#8212; most critics like it, but they don&#8217;t love it), 54\/100 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/sgt-stubby-an-american-hero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero Official Trailer #1 (2018) \u2013 Regal Cinemas [HD]\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L2rekx-k5X0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><em>Aardvark<\/em> (PG-13, 1:29)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Plot:<\/strong> A troubled man (Zachary Quinto) has hallucinations about his famous-actor brother (Jon Hamm), leading him to the care of a therapist (Jenny Slate). I think we&#8217;ve all had hallucinations about Jon Hamm, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:<\/strong> Brian Shoaf (first-timer)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stars:<\/strong> Zachary Quinto, Jon Hamm, Jenny Slate, Sheila Vand<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzz:<\/strong> It may be first alphabetically, but <em>Aardvark<\/em> is just about last among this week&#8217;s new films: 12% at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/aardvark_2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> (average score 4.5\/10), and 37\/100 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/aardvark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>\u00a0(where the nicest review gives it 63\/100).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AARDVARK Official Trailer (2018) Jon Hamm, Jenny Slate Drama Movie HD\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oQf4tNGeNzU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Smaller releases playing here &#8216;n&#8217; there, keep your fingers crossed for them to come to your town:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Rider<\/em><\/strong>: Fact-based drama about a rodeo rider and his horse, acted largely by non-professionals. Directed by Chloe Zhao (<em>Songs My Brothers Taught Me<\/em>).\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/the_rider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>: 98% (only one negative review); <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/the-rider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>: 91\/100.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Borg vs McEnroe<\/strong><\/em>: Another true story, this time about Bjorn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) and John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf) and their 1980 tennis rivalry. Directed by Denmark&#8217;s Janus Metz. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/borg_vs_mcenroe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>: 80%; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/movie\/borg-vs-mcenroe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metacritic<\/a>: 65\/100.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Mercury<\/strong><\/em>: From India comes this silent horror thriller about a group of deaf-mute people trapped in a ghost town where everyone died of mercury poisoning. Reviews sparse so far.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Wildling<\/strong><\/em>: Horror\/fantasy about a teen (Bel Powley) who&#8217;s kept locked up by her &#8220;daddy&#8221; (Brad Dourif) so a child-eating monster doesn&#8217;t get her.
