Answers to Your Burning Captain Marvel Questions!

OK, Marvelinos! You’ve seen Captain Marvel and reveled in its 1990s awesomeness! (Remember how everyone back then had cats?) But you’re still wondering about a few things — and that’s where we come in! Buckle up and keep reading as we answer your burning questions about the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

How come they never call her “Captain Marvel” in the movie?

Dang, you’re right! I bet they just forgot.

What is that small, furry creature that Carol and Fury keep as a pet?

That cute little guy is a cat! They are very common in North America.

Nick Fury has always had an eyepatch before, but now he doesn’t have one. Why?

This is one of those “blink and you’ll miss it” things (pardon the pun), but it’s important: Captain Marvel takes place before the other movies.

The movie shows Annette Bening as holder of all knowledge and wisdom. Does she actually know everything? Does she know why my dad left?

Yes, but she’s not going to tell you.

Why does Captain Marvel look so different from the comic books?

Comic books are a series of drawings, but movies are a series of photographs that give the illusion of movement when shown in rapid succession. That’s why Captain Marvel looks so different — you’ve never seen her in motion before!

Is that a fictional language we hear the characters speaking?

Nope, that’s English. It is spoken by about 20 percent of the world’s population — including the Avengers!

How did they make the Skrull look like the old lady on the bus?

Good old-fashioned movie magic, that’s how! Instead of using makeup and prosthetics to turn the actor playing the Skrull into an old woman, they simply hired an actress who was an old woman. It’s a completely different person!

What were those strange vignettes at the beginning of the film, each a couple minutes long and telling a different story?

Those were trailers for other movies.

Isn’t playing No Doubt’s “Just a Girl” in the climax pretty on-the-nose for a movie about an empowered female superhero? Were there no other adults present when that decision was made?

There were not.

How will Captain Marvel’s powers defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame?

We haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame, so we don’t know. Good question, though!

Isn’t there a Captain Marvel in the DC Universe? The guy they’re calling “Shazam” now? What’s up with having two Captain Marvels?

Shut up, nerd.
